Giuseppe Frana e Alberto Turra @ CPM
Alberto Turra @ CPM
On 21th of May, the CPM Music Institute in Milan hosted Alberto Turra during the May 2025 Open Week.
Alberto Turra is a guitarist, composer, and arranger from Milan who, over the past fifteen years, has developed a distinctive voice in the Italian music scene. Not just a guitar virtuoso, Turra is a versatile artist: alongside his live performances, he collaborates with names such as Roy Paci-Corleone, Pierpaolo Capovilla, Shanir Erza Blumenkranz, Diego Mancino, Giovanni Venosta, and many others, and composes for film, theater, and dance.
His album Filmworks, released in 2017 by Felmay, collects music composed “on commission” for various visual art projects, films, and documentaries, unifying them into a cohesive journey despite their stylistic and contextual differences. The result is a work that spans folk, jazz, rock, ethnic influences, and moments of sonic experimentation, achieving both coherence and emotional depth.
In live performances, Turra brings the same expressive freedom that characterizes his recordings: from solo tours to projects such as Turbogolfer Duo(s), Kabikoff, Mamud Band, and other ensembles where he explores the boundaries between improvisation, visionary rock, and avant-garde.
With Filmworks serving as both a milestone and a launchpad, Alberto Turra confirms himself as an artist willing to go beyond labels, capable of transforming his music for images into autonomous sonic experiences that evoke places, emotions, and inner narratives.
The event is part of the prestigious collaboration between CPM and Siena Jazz, as highlighted in the following press release:
Siena Jazz Opens to Applied Research
ANVUR has approved Italy’s first doctoral program on the “Languages of Improvisation in Contemporary Music,” in collaboration with the Accademia Musicale Chigiana and other national partners.
Siena, August 5 – Siena Jazz achieves another milestone by opening up to applied research with the launch of Italy’s first doctoral program in “Languages of Improvisation in Contemporary Music.” The program, conceived and submitted by Siena Jazz to the Ministry of University and Research (MUR), has already received favorable feedback from ANVUR (National Agency for the Evaluation of the University and Research System).
The doctoral school represents a unique opportunity for artistic and professional growth at the international level, focusing on high-level artistic research. Applications must be submitted by September 2. Full details and application procedures are available here: Siena Jazz Doctoral Program
The program addresses the innovation needs of contemporary music production, with a specific focus on applied research in performing arts, the enhancement and reinterpretation of musical heritage, and the exploration of new audiences. The introduction of a third-cycle doctoral program complements Siena Jazz’s existing excellence pathways.
Among the program’s priorities is a scholarship dedicated to female candidates to encourage and support women’s access to research and music production in an international context.
The doctoral school collaborates with prestigious partners, including the Accademia Chigiana and Fondazione Monte dei Paschi di Siena, as well as AFAM institutions such as the Conservatorio G. Frescobaldi of Ferrara and CPM Music Institute, already partners in the JazzAble project funded under the PNRR.
Key to this collaboration is the synergy between Siena Jazz and Accademia Chigiana, with joint initiatives such as the Tabula Rasa project coordinated by M° Stefano Battaglia and the “Chigiana meets Siena Jazz” events, which have been featured for years in both institutions’ summer programs. The connection between Chigiana and Siena Jazz, combining educational and artistic production activities, fosters a fertile environment for field research, thanks to annual international events and the high caliber of artists presenting works in Siena.
The Doctoral Program in Languages of Improvisation in Contemporary Music is a three-year study and research course aimed at performers from diverse traditions (jazz, contemporary classical, rock, pop, folk), with a focus on candidates whose artistic practice embraces a cross-disciplinary approach.
The faculty composition enhances the program’s scientific quality and ensures sustainability in terms of resources and facilities, with financial support from Fondazione Monte dei Paschi di Siena and contributions from other partners in terms of venues, structures, and equipment. The doctoral board includes Francesco Bigoni (Siena Jazz, course coordinator), M° Stefano Battaglia, Filippo Vignato, Alfonso Santimone, Dan Kinzelman, Demian Cabaud (Siena Jazz), Marta Raviglia (Conservatorio Frescobaldi, Ferrara), Gabriele Comeglio (CPM Music Institute), and Susanna Pasticci and Stefano Jacoviello (Accademia Chigiana).
The president of Siena Jazz expressed great satisfaction with the launch of the doctoral program: “This success,” said Prof. Massimo Mazzini, “adds to the positive achievements of recent months, marking a particularly fertile period for our Academy. It is a success shared with the entire city, which looks to the future musical development of young talents thanks to the collaboration of two of Italy’s main musical excellences.”
The president of the Accademia Musicale Chigiana, Dr. Carlo Rossi, also expressed appreciation “for the creation of a joint initiative that pools some of the best resources of the two Sienese institutions and achieves an outcome long pursued through spaces for dialogue and formative experiences dedicated to new sounds.”
